The earth, sadly, lives on


John Quincy Adams, sixth President of the U. S., died on this day in 1848. His last words:

"This is the last of earth. I am content!"

This is also the date of death (in 1821) of poet John Keats. He wrote:

"The poetry of the earth is never dead."
